Green Steel Mission: A Path to Sustainable Steel Production

The Ministry of Steel formed 14 Task Forces to drive decarbonization in the steel industry. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the ministry awarded two pilot projects to produce DRI using 100% Hydrogen in vertical shafts and one project to use hydrogen in Blast Furnaces, reducing coal and coke consumption. These initiatives represent significant strides towards Green Steel Production.

While the Ministry of Steel has not mandated green steel procurement for government agencies, it has introduced several initiatives to support the industry’s green transition:

  • Green Steel Taxonomy: Defines and categorizes low-emission steel, helping create a green steel market and attract financial support for Green Steel Production.
  • Steel Scrap Recycling Policy (2019): Aims to increase domestic scrap availability and reduce coal usage in green steel production.
  • Vehicle Scrappage Policy (2021): Boosts steel sector scrap availability by regulating vehicle disposal.
  • National Solar Mission (2010): Encourages solar energy adoption to lower steel industry emissions.

To sum up, these initiatives position India’s steel sector toward a sustainable and low-carbon future, fostering green steel production.
