Why BIS Licensing is Essential for Steel Manufacturers

Quality Control Order in the Steel Sector

The Indian government actively ensures quality in steel production by standardizing specifications, testing methods, and manufacturing processes.

Manufacturers Need to Obtain BIS License

The government enforces these standards through the Quality Control Order (QCO), requiring both domestic and international manufacturers to obtain BIS licenses. This approach guarantees consistent quality across manufacturers. To date, 151 steel standards developed by BIS have been included in the QCO, with ongoing efforts to cover all steel consumed in the country. Imported steel consignments also undergo scrutiny to prevent substandard products.

To boost global competitiveness and sustainability in the steel sector, the government is developing a comprehensive strategy. A Working Group focuses on four key areas: raw materials, investments, technologies, and steel exports. Following extensive stakeholder consultations, the group will produce a strategy paper outlining targeted cooperation and action plans for priority countries.
