Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)

Founded in 1931 by Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis, the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) has grown from a small research center into a globally renowned institution excelling in statistics, mathematics, economics, and computer science. It is consistently ranked among the top institutions for statistical education and research in the fields of Statistics and Data Science. Consequently, ISI advances statistical sciences, provides high-quality education, and conducts cutting-edge research in Statistics and Data Science.

ISI has significantly shaped national policies and strengthened India’s statistical infrastructure. The institute also leads in data science, machine learning, economics, and policy research. It has produced many of India’s top statisticians, economists, and computer scientists. Additionally, ISI conducts research in biology, geology, and physics. The institute has become a hub for cryptology and security science, both vital for Statistics and Data Science domains.

ISI Delhi Centre offers postgraduate programs like M.Stat., MS(QE), and Ph.D. in statistics, mathematics, and quantitative economics. In 2024, the Delhi, Kolkata, and Bangalore centers launched a new four-year undergraduate program—Bachelor in Statistical Data Science (BSDS). All in all, this program expands opportunities for aspiring data scientists focused on Statistics and Data Science.
