India has emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturing hub. It grew from just two units in 2014 to over 300 units today. In 2014-15, only 26% of mobile phones sold in India were locally made, with the rest imported. Today, 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are manufactured domestically. The production value skyrocketed from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24, demonstrating the success of mobile manufacture in the country.
Massive Growth in Production & Exports
India now manufactures 325–330 million mobile phones annually, supporting one billion devices in use. All in all, with domestic saturation, mobile manufacture for exports has surged from zero in 2014 to ₹1,29,000 crore today.
Electronics Manufacturing: A Decade of Job Creation
The sector has created 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs. This has boosted economic growth and social development. The ‘Make in India’ initiative has enabled domestic production of chargers, battery packs, USB cables, Lithium-Ion Cells, speakers, microphones, display assemblies, and camera modules. It’s evident that the mobile manufacture industry has played a key role in job creation.
Deepening the Value Chain: The Future of Indian Electronics
To sum up, India now aims to advance semiconductor and component production, strengthening self-reliance. This positions itself as a global electronics leader. The India Semiconductor Mission has approved five major projects, including Micron, Tata Electronics, CG Power, and Keynes. This establishes India’s long-awaited semiconductor manufacturing base, reinforcing its strength in mobile manufacture.
