The Turing Test is a thought experiment that determines if a machine can think like a human. It was developed in 1950 by Alan Turing, a mathematician, computer scientist, and cryptanalyst. The test is also known as the imitation game.
In the Turing Test, a human interrogator tries to determine if a machine or a human is the one responding to their questions. The machine’s goal is to trick the interrogator into thinking it’s human. The test is repeated multiple times. The machine passes the test if the interrogator can’t reliably tell the difference between the machine and the human. The Turing Test is still used to study artificial intelligence (AI) and how it interacts with humans. It’s also used to reflect on the definitions of “thinking” and “intelligence”.

There are several variations of the Turing Test, including:
- Gender-neutral version: A computer replaces the man, and a human of either sex replaces the woman.
- Simplified version: The interrogator only interacts with one participant, either a computer or a human.
- Oral examination: The interrogator asks the participant questions to determine if they understand the material.
- Interrogator’s knowledge: The interrogator either knows that the participant could be a computer, or they don’t know. The Turing Test has also inspired other ideas, such as the “Chinese room” argument. This argument proposes that a machine can’t actually think, even if it passes the Turing Test.
