India’s renewable energy sector has achieved a significant milestone, with total installed capacity reaching 209.44 GW by December 2024. According to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), this marks a remarkable 15.84% growth from the 180.80 GW recorded in December 2023. This progress reflects India’s unwavering commitment to clean energy and its broader vision under the ‘Panchamrit’ goals announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Record-Breaking Capacity Additions
In 2024 alone, India added 28.64 GW of renewable energy capacity—an impressive 119.46% increase compared to the 13.05 GW added in 2023.
Solar and Wind Energy Leading the Way
- Solar Power: The biggest contributor, adding 24.54 GW in 2024, marking a 33.47% increase from 73.32 GW in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024.
- Wind Energy: Expanded by 3.42 GW, bringing the total capacity to 48.16 GW, reflecting a 7.64% growth from the previous year.
Growth in Bioenergy and Small Hydro Power
- Bioenergy: Capacity increased from 10.84 GW in 2023 to 11.35 GW in 2024, a 4.70% rise.
- Small Hydro Power: Grew modestly from 4.99 GW to 5.10 GW, reflecting a 2.20% increase.
