Genomic Revolution

India has unveiled its groundbreaking genomic dataset, featuring 10,000 whole genome samples, to propel global genomic research and medical advancements. This extensive collection, now accessible worldwide through the Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC), serves as a crucial resource for genomics research and personalized medicine.

India Leads in Genomic Research

The Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC) facilitates seamless access to diverse genetic variations from Indian populations. This initiative firmly positions India as a global leader in genomics research, paving the way for demographic-specific genomic chips to enhance precision in genetic studies.

GenomeIndia: A Vision for the Future

Spearheaded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the GenomeIndia project aims to build a comprehensive database representing India’s genomic diversity. This vast data pool will support advancements in mRNA vaccines, protein manufacturing, and genetic disorder treatments. India’s genomic richness reflects its diversity in culture, food, and geography.

Ethical Data Sharing & Research Growth

The launch of the Framework for Exchange of Data (FeED) Protocols, under the Biotech-PRIDE Guidelines, ensures ethical and transparent genomic data sharing. Established in 2021, these guidelines reinforce India’s dedication to secure and responsible genomics research.

India’s Expanding Bioeconomy

India’s bioeconomy has surged, growing from $10 billion in 2014 to over $130 billion in 2024, with projections to reach $300 billion by 2030. Ranked 12th globally in biotechnology and 3rd in Asia-Pacific, India is the largest vaccine producer and boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem. The number of biotech startups has skyrocketed from 50 in 2014 to over 8,500 in 2023, solidifying India’s leadership in genomics research and biotechnology.

Driving Global Scientific Breakthroughs

The GenomeIndia project cements India’s status as a hub for genomic research, driving the next wave of scientific and medical breakthroughs through genomics research.
