NATIONAL TECHNICAL TEXTILES MISSION (NTTM)
- The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), launched for 2020-21 to 2025-26 with a Rs. 1480 crore budget, aims to boost Technical Textiles in India. Its key pillars include ‘Research Innovation & Development,’ ‘Promotion and Market Development,’ ‘Education, Training and Skilling,’ and ‘Export Promotion.’ NTTM focuses on increasing the use of technical textiles in flagship missions, strategic sectors, and programs. As of now, the Ministry has approved 168 projects in Specialty Fibers and Technical Textiles, worth approximately Rs. 509 crores.
- To ensure quality in domestic consumption and imports, the Ministry has issued 68 Quality Control Orders (QCOs) across various segments. All in all, these segments are: Geo-tech (20), Protective Textiles (12), Agro Textiles (20), Medical Textiles (6), Ropes & Cordages (9), and Indutech (1). Over 600 BIS standards have been developed for Technical Textiles, including 200+ standards introduced since NTTM’s launch.
- The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), now MATEXIL, leads the Export Promotion Council for Technical Textiles.
- Under NTTM, guidelines were issued to support private and public academic institutes in technical textiles. Consequently, the Ministry approved 38 proposals worth Rs. 191 crores to upgrade lab facilities and train faculty, fostering a technical textiles ecosystem. Through the General Guidelines for Grant for Internship Support in Technical Textiles (GIST), bachelor’s and master’s students receive up to INR 20,000 per month as internship incentives via 16 impaneled companies or TRAs.
