IMD collaborates with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and state governments to create and implement preparedness guidelines for extreme weather events such as cyclones, heatwaves, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall.

Vulnerability Mapping

Using the Normalized Vulnerability Index, IMD has assessed the percentage of districts and populations affected by various weather events. For instance, the vulnerability atlas for heatwaves shows that 13% of districts and 15% of the population are classified as moderate to highly vulnerable. Notably, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh have the highest number of vulnerable districts.
