The 15th Finance Commission has allocated ₹8,000 crore for establishing eight new cities, with one city permitted per state. An Expert Committee has set eligibility criteria and received 28 proposals from 23 states. Special provisions are in place for North-Eastern states, including a smaller city size and population requirement.
