Artificial Intelligence is transforming search engines, business, software, advertising, image generation, video creation and everyday digital services. However, behind the rapid growth of AI lies an increasingly important question: What is the environmental cost of Artificial Intelligence? Modern AI systems consume electricity, water and computing resources, while their carbon footprint often remains difficult for users and regulators to measure. The paper argues that environmental costs are rising faster than legally required transparency, creating a major gap in global AI governance.
This article explores the growing global debate around Environmental AI Regulation, Green AI and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence. It explains the environmental impact of AI training and inference, the growing energy demands of reasoning models, the Jevons Paradox, generative AI search and the limitations of existing data-centre-focused regulation. A central argument is that regulating only the physical infrastructure of AI is not enough; policymakers increasingly need information about the environmental footprint of individual AI models and applications.
