UNESCO HERITAGE SITES IN INDIA

India’s cultural heritage gained fresh global recognition with the inscription of the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, on 25 July 2026. As the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, Sarnath is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites associated with his life, and the inscription takes India’s tally to 45 UNESCO World Heritage properties — sixth highest globally and second in the Asia Pacific region.

This article traces Sarnath’s journey to World Heritage recognition, the criteria under which it was inscribed, and its significance as a global centre of Buddhist pilgrimage. It also maps India’s complete list of UNESCO World Heritage sites from the Taj Mahal and Ajanta Caves in 1983 to Sarnath in 2026, the institutional machinery behind India’s nominations — the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India — and government initiatives such as Adopt a Heritage 2.0, the Gyan Bharatam Mission and the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities. Useful for anyone following Indian culture, heritage conservation, tourism policy or UPSC and state civil services preparation.
