First Sea Shipment of Indian Pomegranates to Australia

APEDA Facilitates First-Ever Sea Shipments of Indian Pomegranates to Australia

India has reached a major milestone in agricultural exports with its first sea shipments of premium Sangola and Bhagwa pomegranates to Australia. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in collaboration with AgroStar and Kay Bee Exports, led this breakthrough, opening new opportunities for Indian fresh produce in global markets.

Expanding Market Access for Indian Pomegranates

India secured approval for pomegranate exports to Australia in early 2024. By February, a work plan and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) were in place, leading to the first air shipment in July. This initial shipment assessed market demand and set the stage for more cost-effective sea shipments.

The first sea-freight shipment departed India on December 6, 2024, and arrived in Sydney on January 13, 2025, carrying 5.7 metric tons (MT) of pomegranates from Maharashtra’s Solapur region. These were packed into 1,900 boxes, each containing 3 kg of premium fruit. Another shipment of 6.56 MT of Bhagwa pomegranates reached Brisbane on January 6, 2025.

Quality Assurance and Sustainability

Both shipments used ANARNET, India’s traceability system, ensuring full transparency and consumer trust in international markets. Bulk sea shipments reduced costs, making Indian pomegranates more affordable while benefiting farmers and exporters. This sustainable approach strengthens India’s global agricultural presence.

Strong Market Response and Future Growth

The pomegranates received an enthusiastic response in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, leading to immediate orders for more shipments. With the next export season beginning in September, AgroStar’s INI Farms, Kay Bee Exports, and other key players are prepared to meet rising demand and ensure a steady supply of Indian pomegranates to Australia.

This success reinforces India’s leadership in agricultural exports and strengthens trade relations with Australia. By aligning shipments with Australia’s off-season, Indian exporters maximize market opportunities while consistently meeting international quality standards.

APEDA’s Role in Promoting Agricultural Exports

APEDA, a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, actively supports Indian farmers and agribusinesses. Through market development, infrastructure expansion, and traceability systems like ANARNET, APEDA drives India’s agricultural exports forward. With steady growth in fresh fruit, vegetable, and processed food exports, India continues to strengthen its global agri-trade presence.

These successful shipments mark a significant step toward expanding India’s footprint in the Australian market, creating new opportunities for farmers, and enhancing the global reach of Indian agricultural products.
