Organic Farming Benefits in India: PKVY and MOVCDNER Explained

The Government promotes organic farming through Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) in all states and UTs (except the Northeast) and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) in the Northeast. Both schemes provide end-to-end support, covering production, processing, certification, marketing, post-harvest management, and training.

Under PKVY, farmers receive ₹31,500 per hectare over three years, including ₹15,000 via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for organic inputs. MOVCDNER offers ₹46,500 per hectare over three years, with ₹32,500 for organic inputs, including ₹15,000 as direct benefit transfer. These initiatives strengthen organic farming and farmer empowerment.

India ensures organic produce quality through two certification systems:

  1. Third-Party Certification (NPOP) – Accredited agencies under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) certify organic production, processing, trading, and exports under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  2. Participatory Guarantee System (PGS-India) – Under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, farmers and stakeholders assess, inspect, and verify each other’s practices to certify organic produce for the domestic market.

Under PKVY, farmers receive ₹4,500 per hectare over three years for value addition, marketing, and publicity. The scheme also provides ₹3,000 per hectare for certification and training and ₹7,500 per hectare for capacity building. Under MOVCDNER, farmers get ₹10,000 per hectare over three years for training, capacity building, and certification.

States organize trade fairs, workshops, and buyer-seller meets to boost market access. The government’s Jaivikkheti. web portal connects 6.22 lakh registered farmers directly with consumers, ensuring better price realization for organic produce.
