National Mission on Cultural Mapping
The Ministry of Culture launched the National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) to document and promote India’s rich cultural heritage. It is implemented by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). NMCM also aims to revitalize rural economies through the heritage preservation.
As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, NMCM introduced the Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD) portal in June 2023 (mgmd.gov.in). It documents the cultural heritage of 6.5 lakh villages across India. Currently, 4.5 lakh villages have their cultural portfolios live on the portal.
The MGMD portal records diverse cultural elements, including oral traditions, beliefs, customs, historical landmarks, art forms, and traditional food. India’s cultural heritage is represented through the documentation of prominent artists, fairs, festivals, attire, and ornaments.
By preserving and promoting these cultural assets, NMCM strengthens cultural identity and boosts rural economic growth. A structured format ensures accurate data collection for cultural domains, artists, and traditional art forms on the portal.
To sum up, NMCM’s current goal is to complete the database of 6.5 lakh villages and upload their cultural information. Other components include Sanskriti Pratibha Khoj (Cultural Talent Hunt) and the National Cultural Workplace, focusing on India’s cultural heritage. There are also outreach efforts through newsletters, magazines, booklets, advertisements, media, and content development.
